On behalf of Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Humanitarian & Charity Est., it gives me honour to invite you to participate in the 12th edition of the Dubai International Humanitarian Aid & Development Conference & Exhibition – DIHAD 2015 to be held in Dubai from March 24 – 26, 2015. As an active charity foundation in the UAE, we are proud to support DIHAD in all its activities where we can grow and share experiences with the regional and international humanitarian community. With a world blighted by suffering and poverty, we wish to further facilitate the work of local and regional humanitarian actors to meet with the ultimate goal of reducing suffering around the world. (Ibrahim Bumelha, Message from the Chairman of DIHAD)

DIHAD, the Dubai International Humanitarian Aid and Development Conference and Exhibition, enters into its successful 12th edition with a unique identity which surpasses all regional and international borders. With the commencement of DIHAD in 2004, we endeavored to address the global needs of the people and countries affected by crises, disasters and natural calamities. It was our objective to establish a platform and an interface where the world representatives of the corporate and government sectors joined their hands to cultivate the spirit of promoting development, harmony and empowerment. Today, DIHAD has moved a step ahead in the achievement of this vision. Under the esteemed guidance and patronage of H.H Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President, Prime Minister of United Arab Emirates, Ruler of Dubai, supported by Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Humanitarian and Charity Est. and also officially supported by United Nations, UAE Red Crescent, Dubai Cares, International Humanitarian City and Organization of Islamic Cooperation, DIHAD has been acknowledged as the region’s sole humanitarian voice, a forum that addresses financial, political, social and also environmental humanitarian issues that face the world today. When we collectively think of where we actually stand in terms of the provision of humanitarian assistance to those in desperate need thereof, we are left with a plethora of unanswered questions. In the case of conflicts, we know that political solutions are needed, and we are unsure as to why these elude us. In the case of what we call “natural disasters”, we need the effective implementation of disaster reduction and preparedness strategies, and we wonder as to why these are, in many instances, still not beyond the stage of elaboration. Humanitarian assistance is what we deliver – often too little, late and unevenly distributed – because we have failed in these earlier, more important phases. It is this elementary realisation that leads us to consider Dubai’s EXPO 2020 theme, “Connecting minds, creating the future”, so very appropriate. “Connecting minds” suggests effective leadership, a shared vision and consensus. “Creating the future” suggests learning from the past and capitalising on the present in a constructive attempt to shape our tomorrow. It is on this account that DIHAD’s International Scientific Advisory Board (DISAB) has decided to adopt Dubai’s EXPO 2020 theme, and specifically its sub-themes “opportunity”, “mobility” and “sustainability”, as its own albeit from a humanitarian and development assistance perspective. DIHAD 2015 (24-26 March) will endeavour to elaborate on these sub-themes with an eye to pro-actively seizing the “opportunity”, further developing various aspects of “mobility”, and contributing to the essential “sustainability” of achievements past and present. (H.E. AMB. Gerhard Putman-Cramer, Director, DISAB for DIHAD 2015)
