South Beach is famous for the bright art deco architecture, nightlife and parties, beautiful people and world class hotels, but none of that would be there if it wasn’t for the beach. South Beach’s natural attraction remains the top reason why people from all over the world visit Miami in winter, spring, summer or fall. South Beach is Miami’s most popular beach and a must-see during your visit here.

The eclectic neighborhood around South Beach’s free public beach, beginning at Ocean Drive and 5th Street and stretching up to 21st Street and Collins, includes some of the best and most tourist-friendly shopping, dining and people watching in all of Miami. Pick up your touristy T-shirt, pack a towel and sunscreen and head out to South Beach for the day. No matter the season, you’ll see a blend of long time locals, new international transplants and visitors. The beach is always busy and the vibe is quintessential South Beach. It’s party-filled, fun and you’ll almost certainly see small planes overhead with banners advertising parties in the area that night.

If you’ve seen the iconic pastel-colored deco lifeguard stands in pictures and movies, this is where you’ll find them. Don’t skip South Beach, the place where Miami’s art deco history, beautiful beaches and popular nightlife come together in just a few blocks.

Lummus Park is a public beachfront park on Ocean Drive, between 5th and 15th Streets. You’ll find beach volleyball courts, sidewalks for rollerblading, power walking or jogging - a beautiful place to get in your workout. So forget the gym, and just go for a swim in the ocean or for a jog with a view that will make the miles tick by. Lummus Park also has free public restrooms and a playground for the kids, among other amenities.

Take a walk along Ocean Drive for an up-close look at the art deco buildings you’ve seen on television and in movies so many times. These buildings are home to everything from sidewalk cafes and bars to boutique hotels; high-end designer stores to fun touristy shops where you can get almost anything, including a henna tattoo. Lincoln Road, just a short walk away, is an outdoor pedestrian mall where you’ll find even more eclectic shops and eateries, bars, and entertainment.

Beach tips. Don’t forget to pack your own beach essentials or stop at a drug store along the way where you’ll find a section with towels, flip-flops, sunscreen and other beach paraphernalia such as toys for the kids and umbrellas. You can rent a lounge chair on the beach, but be sure to take water and other supplies to stay hydrated in the sun.

There are lifeguards on duty every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., who will provide appropriate warnings when necessary. There are also plenty of municipal parking lots in the area as well as some nearby street parking.

Miami’s beaches are famously flat and calm, but along this stretch of beach you may see novice surfers looking for that occasional wave. Staying on Miami Beach? Rent a DecoBike for the day - what a great way to go exploring while getting some exercise at the same time.

With Irma behind, Miami and Florida return to shine the eternal sun
States are real observers of natural events and perfect remedial organizers

The University of Miami is closely monitoring Hurricane Irma, a major category 5 storm with maximum sustained winds of 185 mph, which is currently located approximately 1,475 miles east-southeast of Miami-Dade County. The potential for impacts to South Florida are increasing and plans are being rapidly implemented to ensure the safety of our University Community and facilities. The earliest time South Florida would experience impacts is Friday.

University leadership has decided to cancel all classes and student-related events on the Coral Gables and Rosenstiel School campuses Wednesday through Friday, September 6-8. All weekend classes are also cancelled. The University is strongly encouraging all students on the Coral Gables and Marine campuses to leave South Florida. At a minimum, students will be given 48 hours notice to return before classes will resume, and an exact date for the resumption of classes on the Coral Gables and Marine campuses has not been set.

President Frenk has declared a State of Emergency to emphasize the importance of response to this critical threat to life-safety and ensure all necessary University resources are being allocated to prepare for this storm. The University’s Emergency Operations Center will be activated tomorrow to ensure a coordinated University response over the coming days. An additional communication will be issued later this afternoon with information on changes or cancellations of classes on the Miller School campus. Offices on all the campuses will be open tomorrow. There are no changes to other campus or clinical operations at this time. Updated information will follow later today and tomorrow regarding potential changes.

Basket. Miami Heat, sometimes the story of a basketball game is what doesn't happen.

So here's what didn't happen Saturday night at Madison Square Garden, not after the first timeout and even after the second: Shane Battier didn't come out. He didn't come out until after the first quarter had been completed, and he had thoroughly flustered and somehow outscored his main mark, Carmelo Anthony, by an 11-4 count. "A lot of things I can't explain tonight," Battier said, after the Miami Heat's 106-91 victory against the New York Knicks. "A lot of things." Battier's unexpected extended early usage—part of a 30-minute night—was just one of head coach Erik Spoelstra's many surprises Saturday night, a night that, in a sense, signaled the early start of the Heat's more serious spring.

Spoelstra, who has typically used nine, 10 or even 11 players in the first half, used only eight until just 50 seconds remained in the fourth quarter. Only then did he want to get LeBron James (30 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, six steals) and Dwyane Wade (22 points, four rebounds, four assists, two steals) off the floor. The coach warned not to read too much into it, that he simply didn't want to remove Battier when the forward was going so well, and that he kept looking for places to insert Greg Oden. That all may be true, and certainly Oden should get a shot on Monday against Detroit's massive front line.

1915 - The Miami Beach Century - 2015
In 2015 the City of Miami Beach will celebrate its 100th anniversary which will be highlighted by an extraordinary mega beach concert. It will be a celebration on a scale that our world famous destination has never witnessed.

The event will additionally provide an unprecedented platform from which our city will focus on protecting our spectacular marine and coastal ecology with an emphasis on climate change strategies for our future.

As an ocean-side city with one of the most popular and celebrated beaches in the world - we believe 2015 is the year to celebrate both our illustrious past and also start the next 100 years by increasing awareness for a global climate initiative with Miami Beach leading the way.

We have engaged ACT Productions (Miami Beach) as our Executive Producer for this event. Bruce Orosz, president, and his team at ACT are developing a visionary event securing major acts in music and show business to participate - honoring the serious history Miami Beach has and continues to play in the music, art, film, theater and TV world for the last 100 years and going forward.

Our team is currently developing the biggest entertainment event in Miami Beach’s history which will feature the most significant iconic figures to have contributed to the fabric of the City. We look forward to welcoming you to join our city and be a part of this historic series of event celebrating 100 years of our legacy. Sincerely, Philip Levine - Mayor, City of Miami Beach
